Hypnosis Frequently Asked Questions:

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally induced altered state of consciousness. We experience this natural phenomenon everyday of our lives. We experience light to medium states of hypnosis when we drive, daydream, read, watch television or movies, and when we listen to music. Examples of medium to deeper states of hypnosis that we experience regularly are the hypnogognic (pre-sleep) state and hypnopompic (pre-wake) state.

What if I can’t be hypnotized?

The majority of the population can be hypnotized because we do it naturally day in and day out. Those who may have difficulty being hypnotized include:
- individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- individuals with developmental disabilities who may have difficulty following directions.
- individuals who do not want to be hypnotized. Willingness is key to hypnotherapy success.

Will I be made to do something against my will?

Although the conscious mind is quieted and passive in the hypnotic state it is still aware. You will likely be aware of everything being said during hypnosis. You will still be in control of yourself and cannot be made to do anything you are not willing to do.

What about stage hypnosis, when people are made to do silly things?

Remember that those people on stage volunteered to be there. They were willing participants selected among those individuals who the hypnotist found to be easily and most quickly hypnotizable. With the audience watching, the charismatic hypnotist speaking, and the pressure to “go along with the show” some people will willing do silly things.

Could I get stuck in hypnosis?

Just as you cannot get stuck in a daydream …you cannot get stuck in hypnosis.

What is a typical session like?

Hypnotherapy sessions generally last from 1.5 to 2 hours. On the first session you will be asked to fill out a case history questionnaire; providing necessary contact information as well as a basic family, social and medical history. Then a portion of time is set aside to discuss your goals and desired outcome. Next your hypnotherapist will describe the hypnosis process before beginning the hypnosis. The hypnosis process will vary from client to client depending on the issues presented and desired outcome. Although you may experience hypnosis as a dreaming-like sensation, you remain aware of what is happening and will consciously remember much or all of what is said to you.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on the client and the issue being addressed. Three sessions are recommended for most issues, however, hypnotherapy for some issues like weight reduction and pain management, for example, often require several additional sessions.
